Headway Carpet Tiles

Headway – A ProjectDIVERT Donation

Zero to Landfill

Encore Environment believes in a reduce, reuse and recycle approach. We encourage early intervention in a project by considering reuse at the design phase. We always strive to increase carbon savings, reducing waste material from site through logistic solutions that improve social and economic targets for waste recycling in the community.

The Project

We were working with Interserve Paragon, an interior fit-out and refurbishment contractor, on refitting several offices in an office space in central London. The client wanted to ensure that the refit reduced carbon footprint, minimised the use of landfill and contributed to the local community. An initial pre-construction environmental audit by Encore Environment identified a substantial number of carpet tiles in good and reusable condition.

The Solution

Using Encore Environment’s ProjectDIVERT app, which uses its unique database to find local charities, businesses and recyclers that would benefit from reusable waste, the carpet tiles avoided being landfill. Encore arranged for them to be collected and distributed amongst suitable recipients. These included Headway, a community-based centre in Northampton, which offers help to those recovering from head injuries and their relatives and carers through therapeutic and social activities.

The Results

Headway offers a sanctuary for those affected by brain trauma, so we were delighted that the carpet tiles were able to replace an old, threadbare carpet and help to refresh the space. Inspired by the donation of these light grey tiles, the grateful charity painted some feature walls to create a light and airy feel for day visitors. At the same time, we were able to achieve carbon savings by avoiding the tiles going to landfill or being burned at Material Recycling Facilities.

Not only did we reduce costs for our clients, we made a real difference to a local organisation who need as much help as they can get. Everyone benefits!
