We have welcomed our new intern Jack Graham to the Encore team! He is studying a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography at Loughborough University, and currently in his ‘Year in Industry’ which is between the second and third year of study. This means he will be with us for 45 weeks before he heads back to the lecture halls.
Encore is excited to support this education business partnership with Loughborough University as it offers a fantastic opportunity to bridge theoretical learning and real-world application. As part of his degree, sustainability is considered a major concept within the subject of Geography, so learning about the practical and corporate aspects of sustainability within waste management will hopefully give him a great start in his future career.
When asked what attracted him to complete his internship at Encore, Jack explained: “I’ve always been interested in geography and sustainability. From being one of those kids who knew every flag and capital city when I was four years old to being the eco team captain focusing on food waste in school before I went to university, I’ve had that passion for the world around me. Having a parent in the construction industry has also sparked my interest in the sector.”
In his second year at Loughborough, Jack was involved in calculating carbon emissions for the forests surrounding the campus. This hands-on experience has been invaluable in understanding emissions from a business perspective, especially when there is a global push towards achieving net-zero emissions. At Encore, we implement sustainable initiatives and provide carbon reporting for clients, so Jack is witnessing first-hand how businesses are making greener choices that are contributing every day to the larger aim of reducing emissions.
Rachel Rowley, managing director at Encore said: “We are delighted to welcome Jack who has already brought fresh perspectives and ideas to the team. It is so important for us to support young people in the industry and that we have a positive impact in shaping their future careers. One of the things Jack said in his interview was having grown up alongside world news of how our environments are changing has been scary. This was really poignant, and makes you really think about how our actions now will affect future generations. It is certainly why Jack wants to be part of the change, so as a business we are proud to be able to support and nurture that.”
