Encore Environment London Office

Encore Environment celebrates two years of growth in London

This month, we marked the second anniversary of our London office opening.

The Encore Environment team expanded in 2017 to provide waste management and environmental consultancy support to large construction contractors in the city. Having a team based in Moorgate, we really appreciate and understand the issues contractors face from the lack of space on-site to the congestion of the road networks.

Addressing a need

There is a huge amount of brownfield regeneration in London and countless fit out and project works within occupied buildings with multiple floors.

As soon as an area becomes derelict, the buildings are demolished and a new building is put in its place. However, this creates tonnes of waste and contractors have strict regulations and restrictions to adhere to including health and safety for its workers and vehicle access. Many sites don’t have the space for all waste containers.

In occupied buildings, the work being carried out could be the refurbishment of the top three floors of a mixed use building, and they may have to build higher. In this instance, all waste management works would need to be carried out before the workers come in, so time restrictions and sheer logistics of getting waste down via a lift are a real challenge.

In London, there are 12 Borough’s and each have a set of rules around the disposal of waste, so for example, if any works are being carried out in close proximity to schools, travel plans covering timings and particular routes also need to be put into place.

Also, as one of the most powerful and influential cities in the World, London has many high security sites where waste management must be handled with great care.

Thinking differently: innovative action

Over the last two years, we have worked with many clients to overcome big city challenges to achieve successful waste management plans. Our aim is to minimise waste in the most safe and sustainable way, ensuring duty of care and compliance. This often challenges conventional methods of waste disposal and requires the contractor to think differently about its processes.

We are very proud of our team of in-house experts and qualified BREEAM assessors, who have worked hard with our London based clients to identify and pursue closed loop opportunities through early intervention and auditing. The team then coordinate and manage waste reduction through a national supply chain of specialist recycling facilities and, where possible, facilitate the diversion of waste material such as white goods, carpet tiles, crockery and sand from landfill to be reused by hospitals, charities, schools, and social enterprises. This is made possible through our pioneering mobile app ProjectDIVERT. By following a structured waste hierarchy, that can determine where to utilise waste materials most effectively, a large proportion of the waste can be recycled or repurposed by organisations in need. Reflecting on the success of the business our MD, Rachel Rowley said: “When we first moved into London it was on the back of a tender with a large contractor, so it gave us the opportunity to really understand the needs of contractors within the city and what solutions we could offer. Having a London base is really important to ensure our clients receive an excellent service, knowing we are immersed in London life understanding the limitations but also realising the opportunities. Our services are always based on intelligent data, impactful decision making and great customer relationships with our team.”

“We have an exciting working environment as we are breaking the mould of how things are traditionally done in waste management especially with the emergence of ProjectDIVERT, and this really appeals to clients. We are looking forward to continued growth across London and other UK city’s.”

Encore Environment’s experience working in London has enabled the expansion of our services into Birmingham, Manchester, Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and recently in Edinburgh, Scotland. Its regional office, which opened in 2012, is based in Northampton.
